The information below is for school-based cases only. That means only confirmed positive COVID-19 cases that were acquired at school, as determined by Department of Health, will be shown.

WHAT IS A SCHOOL-BASED CASE?

Here are a couple of examples to help explain the difference between non-school-based and school-based exposures.

Non-School-Based Exposure Example: 
Over the weekend, a student attends a family gathering where he/she is exposed to the virus. The student attends school Monday and Tuesday and then starts feeling ill. Family gets tested and the student tests positive. This particular student's initial exposure happened outside of the school setting and therefore is considered a non-school-based exposure.

School-Based Exposure Example: 
Over the weekend, a student attends a family gathering where he/she is exposed to the virus. Student attends school Monday and Tuesday and then starts feeling ill. Family gets tested and the student tests positive. After Castle Rock School District is made aware of a COVID positive test result by the Department of Health, the district immediately begins contact tracing any individual that was within 6 feet, for a cumulative 15 minutes of time within a 24 hours period, with the infected student while at school. Any students identified in that investigation are considered close contacts. Those close contacts are immediately removed from school and they are monitored over the next 14 days while staying at home. Any of the identified close contacts that then test positive would be considered a school-based exposure. Meaning, the close contact likely received the virus from the infected student while at school.

NOTE:  The most important methods of preventing COVID-19 include wearing face coverings, maintaining a distance of 6 feet from others, washing hands frequently, and staying home when feeling ill.

IN THE EVENT OF A SCHOOL-BASED EXPOSURE

Castle Rock School District  works closely with the Department of Health (DoH) anytime someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 has been on a school campus while potentially contagious.

DoH interviews every person who tests positive for COVID-19 to determine where they have been and who they may have exposed. If someone who tested positive for COVID-19 was in a school while potentially contagious, DoH works with the school to identify students and staff who may have been exposed.

DoH will notify everyone identified as a close contact* to a COVID-19 case. Schools may also notify those students and staff identified as close contacts. All close contacts of COVID-19 cases are asked to quarantine for 14 days from their last exposure to the person who tested positive. People in quarantine should not leave home except to seek medical care. They should not go to work, school, or childcare facilities, and they should not participate in any social or community activities.

Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19 is instructed to isolate at home until they are no longer contagious, which is typically at least 10 days from the time symptoms began.

*"Close contact" means being within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for about 15 minutes or more. Members of a household are considered to be close contacts. Close contacts are identified by Public Health.
